Sound Canopy was a public sound art facility designed by Michael Burns and produced with assistance from the Hyde Park Art Center with technical support from the Experimental Sound Studio and web support from the Splinter Group. Sound Canopy consisted of a sound system and 32 speakers mounted to the ceiling of an existing construction canopy. Burns invited a number of local art groups and organizations to curate sound work into the canopy. The only requirement was that the work had to, in some way, address the situation of pedestrians moving through the space. Sound Canopy occurred twice in different locations within the Chicago Loop, once in 2002 (Randolph and Wabash) and again in 2004 (State and Adams). Both iterations ran for 3 months with one artists work occupying the space for a duration of one week.
